WHAT IS GAMBLING ADDICTION?
Gambling addiction (also known as problem gambling) is gambling behavior which causes disruptions in any major area of life: psychological, physical, social or vocational. The term "Problem Gambling" includes, but is not limited to, the condition known as "Pathological", or "Compulsive" Gambling, a progressive addiction characterized by increasing preoccupation with gambling, a need to bet more money more frequently, restlessness or irritability when attempting to stop, "chasing" losses, and loss of control manifested by continuation of the gambling behavior in spite of mounting, serious, negative consequences.

GAMBLING ADDICTION SELF TEST
21 Steps to Stop Gambling is a self-help tool and self assessment program for people that are struggling with gambling.
The National Council on Problem Gambling has a Problem Gambling Self Test. A that can evaluate your gambling behavior. The test is not a diagnosis and does not replace a face to face evaluation with a trained clinical professional.
The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery also has the Seven Oaks Gambling Screen
Gamblers Anonymous has 20 Questions to help an individual decide if he or she is a compulsive gambler.

BC Partnership for Responsible Gambling has a website organized into three sections. There’s a Problem Gambling area with specific information on how to recognize the warning signs, and where to turn for help; a Responsible Gambling section with useful information on how to make healthy gambling choices, and on B.C. activities to reduce problem gambling; and an Other Gaming Topics section with information on B.C.’s Responsible Gambling partners, programs and policies and other related gaming topics.

GAMBLING EDUCATION & PREVENTION
The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba explains how casino games work, myths and mistaken beliefs about gambling and the psychology of gambling. They also have an excellent handbook for gamblers called Preparing for Change.
The Addictive Behaviours Laboratory at the Department of Psychology, University of Calgary has a self-help gambling manual called “Becoming a Winner” which can be ordered for a minimal fee. There is also a manual for friends and family members as well as a relapse prevention guide for problem gamblers called “Staying on Track.”
The Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC) has some excellent information on gambling in Canada.
Alberta Gaming Research Institute is an excellent resource for research on the topic of gambling and gambling treatment. The Alberta Gaming Research Institute is a consortium of the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and the University of Lethbridge. Its primary purpose is to support and promote research into gaming and gambling in the Province of Alberta.
Betting on Older Adults has good information on seniors and gambling for families and clinicians.
The Canadian Health Network has a section on Youth Gambling.
Gambling Should Remain a Game: A Self-help Manual is a publication of Loto-Quebec and includes a section for spouses and family members .
National Council on Problem Gambling
is a US-based organization whose mission is to increase public awareness of pathological gambling, ensure the widespread availability of treatment for problem gamblers and their families, and to encourage research and programs for prevention and education.
The National Council on Problem Gambling also offers a National Gambling Counselor Certification (NGCC) designation for counsellors.
ProblemGambling.ca is an online community supported by the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). This web site consists of information about problem gambling for individuals concerned about their own, or someone else’s gambling. ProblemGambling.ca also provides an online space for professionals to exchange knowledge and resources about problem gambling.
The Responsible Gambling Council website focuses on providing general information, news articles, and library resources. The Within Limits portal allows the reader to access helpful tips and supportive materials including a gambling workbook to assist with identifying problems and making positive changes.
SafeCanada.ca is a service of the Government of Canada and has a comprehensive list of gambling education and prevention links.
Saskatchewan Health has a good section on the effects of problem gambling for family, youth, older adults and the workplace.
The Women’s Addiction Foundation of Vancouver has a Women and Gambling section.
Women Helping Women is news and support for female gamblers in recovery.
Youth Gambling International has some excellent resources on youth gambling problems. A McGill University program.
