- Sex Addiction Education & Prevention
Sexual addiction is a pattern of sexual behaviours that are out of control and continue despite negative consequences. As in other addictions, changes in brain chemistry are at the core of the addiction. In sex addiction, the changes are caused by sexual behavior and fantasizing about sex or romantic activities. Sex addiction is a process addiction because no chemicals are taken into the body. Chemical changes occur in the body because of the addicts behaviours. Any sexual activity that causes changes in body chemistry can become and addiction. Even on-line romances become addictive when they are a substitute for reality or a way to escape reality.
Some sexually addictive behaviours are:
- Compulsive masturbation
- Cybersex or Internet sex
- Pornography
- Anonymous sex
- Massage parlours
- Compulsive sex with partner
- On-line romantic or sexual affairs
- Sexual fantasy about fellow workers
- Swinging
- Exhibitionism
- Voyeurism
- Constant sexual references in conversation

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF SEX ADDICTION?
The causes of sex addiction, like other addictions, may include a genetic component. They are also rooted in family of origin environment, life crises and availability of sex and sexual material. Often the early discovery of pornography plays a major role as do family issues. When sex is used to medicate distress the groundwork for sex addiction has been laid. Then, a life crisis can cause the abuse of sex to become out of control and an addiction.
In the case of Internet use, only a short exposure is needed to turn a user into an addict. The Internet offers the three A’s: Accessibility, Anonymity and Affordability. It also offers extremes of behaviour that the hardware of our brain may not be able to handle. Like pornography is also has the power to change our “love maps” or templates that represent what attracts us sexually. It is called the “crack cocaine” of sex addiction.

SEX ADDICTION SELF TEST
Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) has a 12 question survey to assess whether you may have a problem with sexual addiction.
The Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health has the Sex Addiction Screening Test (SAST) to help you figure out if you or someone you care about has a sexual addiction problem.
TREATMENT FOR SEX ADDICTION
There is treatment for sex addiction and many addicts are in long term recovery. Human Rights legislation protects employees such as alcoholics and other addicts from being fired because of disabilities such as addictions. Employees must be given the opportunity to begin treatment with the support of their employer. Sex addiction should be included under that protective umbrella. Zero tolerance should be paired with the opportunity for healing and recovery for employees. In the US a former employee is suing IBM for unjust treatment over his firing.
Treatment for sex addiction should be comprehensive and contain the following:
- 12-Step Group attendance
- Individual and group therapy with a therapist knowledgeable about Sex Addiction treatment
- Education about sex addiction. There are many books available by Dr. Patrick Carnes and others and many informative web sites
- Address other addictions that may be present. Addiction to alcohol or cocaine is often paired with sex addiction.
- Medical attention to ensure physical integrity – e.g. STD testing
- Prescription drugs if needed for anxiety, depression and compulsivity
- Residential treatment may also be recommended

WHAT IS SEX THERAPY?
Sex therapy is a method of treatment used with individuals or couples who have sexual problems and concerns. It is based on the belief that sexuality can be a positive part of life, that relationships can be rewarding and that emotional and physical intimacy is a desirable goal. Sex therapy provides a supportive atmosphere in which individuals or couples can talk about sexual and relationship issues with a professional who is knowledgeable and comfortable with this area of life.

WHAT IS SEXOLOGY?
Sexology is the field of study devoted to the acquisition of knowledge concerning sexual behavior in all of its aspects. This undertaking is made more unique and interesting because of the multi disciplinary nature of this inquiry. While a unique discipline itself, Sexology touches on a wide range of other areas including anthropology, biology, economics, fine arts, gender studies, medicine, music, nursing, psychology, sociology, social work, theology, and a variety of other issues.
Clinical sexologists provide sex education and sex counselling in a variety of settings.

CANADA MUTUAL SUPPORT GROUPS FOR SEX ADDICTION
Which 12-Step groups might be the best for me (or my partner)? There are now 5 separate 12-Step group programs for sex addicts (SA, SAA, SLAA, SCA, SRA). There are 3 organizations for partners of sex addicts (S-Anon, COSA, COSLAA), two for couples (RCA, SA-Couples), and one for sex workers, all with different meeting lists.
Doris Vincent , an Edmonton-based Registered Psychologist with a special interest in sex addiction, has a section that explains mutual support groups for sex addiction. Alternatively, Sharon O’Hara , a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Los Angeles, California has a website explaining the different support groups for sex addiction.
It is important to note that meetings for sex addiction are not as commonplace as those for drug and alcohol problems so those interested may want to check more than one mutual support group. Mutual support group sites can be accessed directly as follows:
COSA is a recovery program for men and women whose lives have been affected by someone else's compulsive sexual behavior.
CoSex and Love Addictions Anonymous (COSLAA) is a 12 step support group for the recovery of family, friends, and significant others whose lives have been affected by their relationship with someone addicted to sex and love.
Recovering Couples Anonymous (RCA) is a fellowship of recovering couples committed to restoring healthy communication and caring and, as a result, finding greater joy and intimacy. The only requirement for RCA membership is a desire to remain in a committed relationship.
S-Anon International Family Groups is a program of recovery for those who have been affected by someone else's sexual behavior. S-Anon is based on the Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) meetings consists of a group of two or more individuals who - using the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of SAA - meet together regularly for the purpose of recovering from their compulsive sexual behavior. A SAA meeting is a safe place. It is a gathering of equals who keep confidences, refrain from judgment, and who support one another through sharing their experience, strength and hope in seeking the common goal of recovering from sexual addiction.
Sex Addicts Anonymous Online Meetings (SAA) are like face-to-face meetings, except they are held over the internet, so people are communicating using their computers. As in a face-to-face meeting people get together to share their experiences and support each other in their recovery from sexual addiction.
SAA meetings are not a place where people go to pick up other people. It is not a place where people share explicit details of their sexual behavior. Instead meetings are groups of people with a common problem (sexual addiction) learning to lead healthy, normal lives and have healthy sexual relationships.
Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) is a fellowship based on the 12 Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Members include both those who suffer from a compulsive need for sex, and those with a desperate attachment to one person. What all members have in common is an obsessive/compulsive pattern, either sexual or emotional (or both), in which relationships or activities have become increasingly destructive to all areas of their lives, career, family, and sense of self-respect.
Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover.
Has a listing of meetings across Canada including all the prairie provinces, Yukon and the Maritimes. One of the larger sex addiction support groups in Canada.
Sexual Recovery Anonymous (SRA) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop compulsive sexual behavior.
